Since 2000, Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles has been home to the largest Día de los Muertos celebration outside of Mexico, and I attended for the first time this year. For 2022, the festivities centered on Mayahuel, the Aztec goddess of fertility and the agave plant. There were separate daytime and nighttime events happening, and I went to the latter, Noche de los Muertos. It was an evening filled with beautiful performances, rituals, altars, and so much more.

When I initially wrote this blog post, we were half-way through 2020. At the time, my mind flashed back to the moment I was excitedly counting down to the New Year, having no clue the months ahead would drastically transform humanity’s existence. That year challenged us significantly, to say the least—first with the global pandemic and then, with the call to action to take an active stance against racism.

Major shifts can send anyone into overload, and there comes a point when you need to stop and center yourself. Change and challenges are an inevitable and a natural part of existence. They’re what help us grow, and what matters is how we react to them. So, what are some of the best ways you can decompress when life becomes heavy? I’m going to share a few tips, from doing the one card Tarot pull to attending spiritual classes. Continue reading “Practicing Magickal Self-Care”

What if I told you that we are all demonically possessed? What if I revealed that an exorcism can be performed by someone who is not a Catholic priest or man? That you can experience the exorcism of your own evil spirits?

Drawing on ritualistic practices and Jungian psychological methods, Dark Ambient Sound Bath provides a healing space that welcomes all who are broken, damaged and tormented. The mantra is, “Redefining wellness by exploring the shadow within,” and it is these inner shadows that you will confront and purge during the experience. Séances, also known as spirit circles, first gained widespread notoriety during the 19th-century Spiritualist movement in late Victorian England. They were gatherings where individuals sought to contact the “other side” to communicate with the dead. Although some were exposed as nothing but smoke and mirrors, there were devout Spiritualists that took the ritual seriously and strove to tap into a Higher Self. More than 150 years later, the practice is still alive. I recently attended a spirit circle at Ipso Facto, a goth/alternative shop in Fullerton, California, that has been hosting séances for the past two years. I’m going to share my experience, plus my Q&A with shop owner Terri Kennedy. Continue reading “Channeling Spirits: An Evening Séance at Ipso Facto”
