How can one not be curious to check out the musical offerings of a band that goes by a name like Horror for Breakfast? I enjoy horror with all my meals, and there’s definitely room on my plate for this group. The duo is from Italy and consists of Lily B. and Louis M. They are very new to the darkwave scene and began creating music in 2023. In December, they unleashed their first two songs, and I’m reviewing them here.
Horror for Breakfast’s music falls under the darkwave umbrella, also possessing elements of alternative rock, electropop and synthpop. As soon as I began playing their tracks, I was immediately drawn into the sound I was hearing. The dark electronic aesthetic evokes a delightfully demented vibe that’s easy to dance to.
The first single I listened to was “Junk File.” The opening is haunting and gradually turns into an energetic beat. Besides the melodies, the other element that caught my attention was the singer’s vocals. They reminded me a bit of Diva Destruction, who I’m a big fan of. There’s a feline, purring quality to Lily’s voice that pairs nicely with their music style. The song taps into emotions of alienation and anxiety. The line, “Your existence is a corrupt file,” succinctly expresses the feeling of not fitting in anywhere and assuming the role of an outsider.
The next track I played was “Night Feaver.” This embodied a sexy, dark synth feel and is a track I can envision being spun at a vampire club. With lyrics such as “a warm shiver and the desire ignites,” “you devour, you crave” and “scream, the pleasure of the night ,“ I can just see nocturnal creatures bearing their fangs. I also couldn’t help but get Miss Kittin vibes as I listened to the song. For anyone who’s not familiar with this artist, she’s a French electronic musician and DJ who has a dark sound. Suffice it to say, my temperature was running high for “Night Feaver.”
I really enjoyed these debut tracks from Horror for Breakfast, and I’m eager to see what music they produce in the future.
