After 20 years of creating music together, In Isolation has released their final EP, Light in Darker Times. The UK-based band has built a reputation for blending various alternative music genres, including new wave, darkwave, and post-punk, and has left a mark on underground music scenes. I had the pleasure of reviewing their 2022 project, Albums | Singles | Soundtracks and am here to give some insight into their latest work.
Light in Darker Times delivers three emotionally charged new tracks that feature soulful lyrics and catchy beats, plus a remix. The opening track, which inspired the name of the EP, is beautifully written and has both a somber and hopeful energy. The mood reflects the duality that the title of the song communicates. The accompanying music video is shot in black and white and color, emphasizing the light and dark aspects of the song. The video also alternates between each band member and shows them in their element playing their hearts out.
“Phantoms” presents a fantastical world with the mention of blue moonlight, Joan of Arc and Romeo. I enjoyed the sorrowful sound of the guitar and overall ethereal vibes of the song. Lastly, there are two versions of “Middle Child Millicent” included on the EP. The original version delivers classic new wave rhythms; the Matt Pop extended remix gives more synth and electronic beats and is perfect if you’re looking for a tune to dance to. The song paints a picture of a discarded young girl brimming with rage and pain. It’s an emotional state that any displaced middle child or overlooked individual can find relatable.
It’s a bittersweet experience listening to this new work. It’s certainly a testament to the amazing chemistry between the band members and their ability to produce music that comes together seamlessly. Frontman Ryan is ending his time with the group, and members John, Mike, and Tony plan to pursue their own music projects. Wherever the winds take them individually, they’ve carved a nice place for themselves in the alternative music scene and have contributed to its evolution. And who knows, maybe we’ll be graced with a reunion in a few years?
You can order the Light in Darker Times limited edition CD on their Bandcamp page but act fast because copies are already half sold out. You can also stream In Isolation on a variety of music platforms.
