Hurtsfall is creating a unique and captivating sound that brings together goth and soul. Their latest track, “Lost Souls (Driving at Night),” puts vampires in the spotlight and, being a vampire enthusiast, that caught my attention. With this new release, the band is deepening their foray into dark, intriguing soundscapes.
Hurtsfall initially came together in 2018 with a slightly different lineup. As of 2022, the members consist of vocalist Sam Harrison Emm, Jamie on synths and Mike (former member of In Isolation) playing bass. Their signature sound is produced by leaving out guitars and solely relying on keyboards and Bass VI. Layer on Sam’s deep and emotive vocals and the result is electrifying. Listening to their music, you experience a blend of gothic rock, synth-pop and post-punk.
The band is based in Nottingham, UK, which is the ancestral home of Romantic poet Lord Byron. This interesting detail puts their macabre artistic inclinations into perspective. Their newest song, “Lost Souls (Driving at Night),” is inspired by the vampire tale Lost Souls by Poppy Z. Brite. The lyrics express the vivacity that fills these immortal beings as they go on their late-night cruise. The energetic pulse of the music takes you along for the ride. It’s a stimulating track to hear that you can’t resist moving to.
The single carries hints of Depeche Mode and Joy Division and embodies the spirit of 80s/90s alternative music. While I love that the song is about my favorite nocturnal creatures, I also really enjoy the overall gothic rock and synth vibes. “Lost Souls (Driving at Night)” is streaming on a variety of music platforms. The band also has a few live performances slated for later this year in the UK, as well as plans to release more music.
