The Dead Electrics arrived on the alternative music scene a few years ago when they debuted their first track in 2018. Since then, they’ve produced a mix of singles and an EP catering to the post-punk, darkwave, and industrial music crowds. They describe their style as “Music for the Strange of Heart.” Their newest song, “Thots and Prayers,” continues the band’s exploration into cryptic realms and subject matter.
The Minneapolis-based music project is spearheaded by Jimmy who supplies the vocals and sick beats. They compare their musical aesthetic to bands such as Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails and The Sisters of Mercy. Through their songs, the group explores a variety of uncanny themes regarding the human condition. Fused with magnetic sounds created by synths, guitars, and drums, The Dead Electrics crafts an alluring and immersive listening experience.
The latest single “Thots and Prayers” is my formal introduction to the band, and it’s made an indelible first impression on me. Jimmy initially began working on it in 2019 after tragic events that occurred in his hometown. He states:
“I wrote the song in pieces after August 23rd, 2019, following the deadly Walmart shooting in my hometown of El Paso, Texas.
The rest came together between then and the current state of the US – which seems to be getting worse.
The moral hypocrisy in ‘keeping children safe’ but allowing them to continually be gunned down in schools by their peers, the rise in hate groups, and continued rise in violence towards people of color.
So many politicians are bought and paid for, and people always suffer because of it. It’s such a tragic cycle.” -Jimmy of The Dead Electrics
While the track has a danceable dark alternative sound, it also possesses deeper political connotations that speak out against injustice, corruption, and violence. The issues Jimmy touches upon resonate strongly with him as a Latino artist. The lyrics are cleverly written, toying with sacrilegious and religious motifs, and the vocals are delivered in a hushed, seductive tone.
“Lace and leather on your skin
‘Thots and Prayers’ by The Dead Electrics
Lift me up with Jesus’s sins
Pray for us in your holy sheets
Bargain priest for my streets”
The Dead Electrics is a music project to keep an eye on, and they plan to release more music in the coming months. “Thots and Prayers” is out now and streaming on multiple music platforms. Make sure to check it out, as well as other music the group has produced.
