There’s no better release date for a goth EP than on Friday the 13th. During June, Black Rose Moves unveiled their debut EP, Death Dance. The duo is based in Birmingham, England, and consists of Grant Leon and Mark Neat. Their latest project is bound to pull at the heartstrings of macabre souls.

Black Rose Moves’ current EP has been a year in the making. It started with the release of “Summer of Sorrow” in June 2024. The group continued producing tracks over the proceeding months, which would result in the creation of Death Dance. It contains four songs that deliver 15 minutes of dark rhythms. Collectively, it offers a balanced blend of gothic rock and darkwave sounds. Although the EP is short in length, it’s a noteworthy representation of the band’s musical style and aesthetic.

The opening track, “Lips Taste Blood,” exudes vampiric vibes. Whether or not that was the group’s intent, I couldn’t help but imagine a pair of vampires waltzing in the moonlight. The poetic lyrics and gothic rock beats of “Shadow Dance” are fitting for a ballroom filled with ghosts and spirits. “Jessica” and the concluding track, “Summer of Sorrow,” emit a danceable energy that’s both haunting and lively. In its entirety, their debut EP captures the contemporary essence of gothic rock and darkwave and proves that Grant and Mark have an undeniable talent for crafting mesmerizing melodies that compel you to move.

“Oh, shadow dance, in the moonlit glow,
Mystical and lonesome show,
A ballet of darkness tonight,
In this cold undead night, shadow dance, shadow dance,
shadow dance.”

Black Rose Moves has a few live shows lined up over the upcoming months. Their future performances include appearances with Vision Video, Clan of Xymox and other notable bands in the goth music scene.

Death Dance is available to stream on various music platforms, and there is also a limited-edition CD. I hope you check it out, and make sure to follow the band to keep up with new announcements.
