Hailing from Lyon, France, Divine Shade is a band that blends a mix of dark alternative sounds that include industrial, darkwave and electronic. Last October, they dropped a single titled “Oublier,” which gives a taste of a bigger music project they’re currently working on. The song is my introduction to this group, and I’m pleasantly pleased with what I hear.
During 2022, Divine Shade toured the UK with Gary Numan who is a prominent figure in the gothic rock, new wave and industrial music scenes. They teamed up with Numan’s guitarist, Steve Fox-Harris, to bring “Oublier” to life. Band member Rémi explains, “The theme of the song is about the concept of resilience and the inner ability to fight against the darkness identification through the rebuilding of self-esteem.”
While the lyrics are in French, I used a translator tool to get a clearer picture of what I was listening to. The words are darkly poetic, with mention of bleeding wounds and releasing past sorrows. It concludes on a hopeful note, beckoning the return of spring. The track embodies a heavier industrial sound that’s dynamic and energetic. My head was subtly rocking back and forth as I played the song.
Fans of bands like Nine Inch Nails and Front Line Assembly will appreciate what Divine Shade has to deliver. “Oublier” is set to be part of an upcoming EP trilogy called Fragments. Keep your eyes peeled for what this group has in store. I know I will.

More years have passed since high school French than I care to discuss, but doesn’t “Oublier” mean “to forget?”
Sets the dark, rich atmospherics, then deepens them upon additional contemplation.

Yes, you’re correct! And sung in French, the song has an even more mystical feel.
