Back in 2020, I started listening to podcasts. The onslaught of the pandemic and staying at home were partly how I got into exploring the shows and episodes that are out on various platforms. And, of course, because my tastes are on the uncanny side, the ones I gravitate toward deliver engaging, macabre content. So, I decided to share my finds in case you’re looking for other ways to consume entertainment. Here’s a list I’ve curated of 11 dark podcasts to listen to now. Some I retired, and you’ll find those in the R.I.P section at the end. I made a few updates to keep the list current and fresh. I hope you enjoy this selection!

Note: Subtitles link to official websites. At the end of the article, I include a note about where you can listen to these podcasts.

The Boulet Brothers’ Creatures of the Night

I’m starting this roundup with the show that turned me on to podcasts in the first place. The Boulet Brothers are producers and entertainers in the drag industry who have gained significant notoriety when they launched their hit drag competition TV series Dragula. When COVID led to the suspension of other projects they had in the works, the pair decided to use their time during quarantine to debut their podcast Creatures of the Night. I can’t express enough how it uplifted my spirits during 2020. The hosts Dracmorda and Swanthula do horror movie and book reviews, interview celebrity guests and feature a “Hauntings in History” segment that is absolutely creepy! The duo releases a new episode biweekly. If you haven’t yet, I also recommend watching Dragula, which you can stream on AMC+ and Shudder.

By Pumpkin’s Light debuted in May 2023 and celebrates Halloween year-round. It’s hosted by Miranda of Spooky Little Halloween and Mike of All Hallows Geek. They discuss all things October 31st with creators, small business owners and other professionals in the spooky industry.

Cemetery Confessions: A Goth Talk Podcast

© Cemetery Confessions

Presented by Dani Ashes, Cemetery Confessions is a podcast discussing all things related to the goth subculture. I appreciate this show because it seeks to do away with the stereotypes and put forth an honest representation of individuals within the community across the globe. Topics range from music to philosophy to lifestyle. Conversation can get deep and the host’s background in sociology lends an insightful perspective. They and past guests have addressed spirituality, aging in the goth subculture and being a goth in the professional working world, among other issues. New episodes come out once a month and are lengthy, running about two hours, but the content is worth the listen.

Dark Art Society

Hosted by artist Chet Zar, this is the official podcast of the Dark Art Society community. Zar has interviewed tons of artists on his show and his goal is to promote visibility of the Dark Art scene, which is still largely underground. He and his guests cover a range of fascinating topics, from personal life experiences to obscure subjects that delve into the occult and psychology. A new episode is released almost weekly, and you can get early access by becoming a member on Patreon. You can read more about Chet Zar and the Dark Art Society in this Spotlight Feature.

Darkness Radio

An individual who found my “Dark Podcasts” pin on Pinterest actually commented and recommended this podcast to me. I haven’t tuned into the show yet myself, but I can tell you it focuses on the paranormal. They leave no corner of the supernatural realm unexplored. From aliens to monsters, they talk about it all. Plus, the hosts are quite seasoned and have over a decade of experience in the paranormal industry. They’ve been going strong for 19 seasons and counting, releasing new content every day!

Ghouls Night In

I learned about Ghouls Night In when I subscribed to Midge Munster’s self-described “campy, kooky, glamorous and spooky” YouTube channel. Midge and her ghoulfriend Penny cover a variety of macabre topics in such a relaxed way that you feel like you’re hanging out with friends. I’ve watched a few episodes on YouTube, and they have such fun, entertaining personalities. I also ran into Midge Munster at the horror con Midsummer Scream, and she was wonderful to talk to. It appears the pair record and release a few episodes monthly, so tune in!

Let’s Get Spooky

Fans of horror personality and content creator LeeAnna Vamp are likely familiar with Let’s Get Spooky. She and her cohost AJ chat about, you guessed it, spooky topics. They’ve talked about cannibalism, deadly toys, weird legends, and more. They also share their experiences attending Halloween events and interview celebrities in the horror film industry. I prefer watching the show on their YouTube channel because I love the set. There’s no established release schedule and new episodes come out at random times throughout the year, so follow their social media channels to keep up.

Rose Sinister: Vampires

© Rose Sinister

Rose Sinister is the alias of Lisa Andresen, the host of this podcast and one of the most enlightening vampire historians I’ve encountered. For years, she was a guide with Haunted History Tours in New Orleans, Louisiana. She’s also an author writing her own tales of vampire fiction. For her show, she has taken her extensive knowledge of these immortal creatures to dissect them through an academic lens. She examines vampires in film, literature and pop culture. Rose Sinister’s research is impeccable, and she takes painstaking care to deliver careful analysis of the topics at hand. Due to the in-depth research required for creating each episode, she was producing a new installment every few months. The show has been on a bit of a hiatus since 2021, but the creator mentioned on social media that she does plan to resume the podcast at some point. I suggest catching up on what she has live so far. You won’t regret it.

Scare You To Sleep

When I discovered this podcast, I was completely taken in by the title! As the name implies, the show relays stories that will make your skin crawl and hair rise. Shelby Scott is the host and is also a horror writer. She reads tales from other authors, as well as true accounts about serial killers and hauntings. There are even episodes dedicated to what she dubs “guided nightmares,” creepy versions of guided meditations. All of this is accompanied by awesome sound effects and music. I’ve just barely touched the tip of the iceberg, but I am so looking forward to listening to more…in the dark. New episodes come out weekly and range anywhere from under an hour to two.

Tales From The Boo Crew

© The Boo Crew

Part of the Bloody Disgusting Network, The Boo Crew features Leone D’Antonio, Trevor Shand and Lauren Shand as your hosts. The trio talks all things horror, including movies, music, events and so much more. They’ve had some amazing celebrity guests in the past, such as Dita Von Teese, Cristina Scabbia (frontwoman of metal band Lacuna Coil), plus tons of actors from a variety of scary films and TV shows. Even if the individuals they have on the show aren’t directly involved in the horror industry, the conversation always highlights the morbid and macabre, never disappointing. I’ve managed to catch a few episodes because the list is endless! There are hundreds of episodes with new ones coming out several times a month.

Vamp Jenn’s Corner

Is it vain of me to include my own podcast on this list? When I initially created this blog post, I hadn’t launched my show yet, and I thought why not throw it into the mix for this update. I began the Vamp Jenn’s Corner podcast in April 2021 and it’s essentially the audio version of my blog of the same name. I wanted to provide multiple ways for audiences to be able to enjoy my content. Some people like to listen, others love to read, while others prefer to watch. This takes care of the listening bit.

My podcast is for anyone who is darkly inclined. I choose blog posts to turn into episodes and add other details along the way. I was ecstatic to be featured on FeedSpot’s roundup of Best Macabre Podcasts and hope to remain there. I do my best to release new episodes a few times a year, so I hope you’ll join me on my odd and macabre adventures!

I hope this list provides some spooky entertainment for those moments when you’re looking for something new to discover. It has for me. The podcasts mentioned here are released on various platforms, so just search by title on your app of choice or visit the official websites by clicking on the titles in this feature.

Please, if you know of other dark podcasts out there that I need to check out, let me know in the comments. This list touches only the tip of the witch’s hat, and I do plan to update it from time to time.

R.I.P

Here lie the podcasts that were formerly on this list. I couldn’t bring myself to remove them completely. I noticed some haven’t released new episodes in a while, which may mean the shows are just on a hiatus and not gone forever. In the event they return from the dead, I can include them again.

Creepy Kingdom

© Creepy Kingdom

This is the official podcast of the media and entertainment website Creepy Kingdom. Their tagline says it all: “Covering the spooky side of films, theme parks, haunts and beyond!” I was one of their contributing writers for a couple of years. The content is fun and amusing, and the show is a great way to catch up with everything the brand has going on for social media, events and breaking news.

D.A.E. Presents ARTPIT

© The Dark Art Emporium

Dark Art Emporium owner Jeremy Schott and Assistant Director Jeremy Cross (aka “The Jeremys”) started this podcast as a result of the pandemic. When they had to temporarily close the gallery to patrons and stall art events, the pair had some extra time on their hands and decided to launch their show where they chat with artists, musicians, collectors and friends. These guys have such good chemistry and are hilarious, drinking beer, swearing up a storm and overall, just having a good time with their guests! They don’t seem to have a set timeframe for releasing new episodes. So far, there are only a handful, but I’m hoping they’ll be putting up more soon.

Drawing From Experience

© Shane Izykowski

This is the podcast of Shane Izykowski, a multi-talented artist who not only paints, but also has experience with photography, filmmaking and special effects makeup, to name a few. On his podcast, he talks to individuals from all creative walks of life. I had the pleasure of being a guest on Episode 99! The discussions are genuine and address art, the struggles and triumphs of pursuing your passions, and many other interesting topics. He releases a few episodes every month, and there are plenty worth catching up on as well. Plus, check out this past interview I did with him and Martin Darkside regarding their vampire exhibition “Darkness Eternal.”

Madames & Murderers

© Malia Miglino/ Macabre Mondays Productions

This podcast debuted in February 2021 and is the brainchild of Malia Miglino, aka LA History Girl and the creator behind Macabre Mondays. Miglino has a penchant for morbid history and launched her show Madames & Murderers to share stories of some of the most scandalous and horrific figures to exist in centuries past. I’ve been tuning in since its debut and am really enjoying what I’m hearing. New episodes are published nearly every Monday. I’ve had the opportunity to interview Malia about her projects, so if you want to learn more about the content creator, check out the blog features here and here.

Tales

Just as I thought I was going to cap the list off at 10 entries, I recently discovered this podcast when I opened my Spotify app. The show presents the original, uncensored versions of classic fairy tales, from Sleeping Beauty to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. While these stories have been watered down over time to be suitable for children, they’re actually quite morbid and twisted, featuring murder, sex and cannibalism. I haven’t started listening yet, but I am eager to dig in. Tales is a Spotify original podcast, so only a limited number of episodes are available on other platforms. A few episodes are released a month and are anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour long.

  1. Haunting collection, Jenn. Cool, though hardly surprising, you contributed your talents to at least a couple of them, and interviewed the principles in others

I choose the word “haunting” intentionally. Your site conjured these podcasts in my imagination, and now they chase my consciousness, inconsolable (perhaps) until my curiosity is sated.

That said, I likely will avoid “Scare You to Sleep.” Not because I’m uninterested, but rather, because it’s far too fascinating. See I know myself, and can imagine the subject matter producing a minorly major freak-out. Well, I may be ready someday, but for now…(Patience please, as I’m still a baby bat with at least one foot still in the Enlightenment’s sunshine.)

On the other hand, “Tales” is right up my alley. Thanks for all the great ideas! Can I keep all these spirits you’ve unbottled?

  2. Great list! I’m new to podcasts too and got into them during the pandemic due to the Boulet Brothers’ Creatures of the Night podcast too so this post definitely hit home. 😛
Definitely going to have to check some of these out. Madames & Murderers especially caught my attention. Thanks for the awesome recommendations! 😀
