Who recalls when they first watched 28 Days Later? The 2002 film played such a pivotal role in reimagining zombies and presented them in a disturbing yet captivating way that has stuck with audiences. Director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland have teamed up again to create 28 Years Later, a narrative that is set nearly 30 years after the rage virus has spread. It’s a fascinating storyline that shows how survivors are managing to exist alongside the infected. I had the pleasure of attending a special screening before the official release. Don’t worry, no spoilers will be included in this review.
A courageous boy, Spike, is at the center of the film. He lives with his parents and a small community on an island that’s connected to the mainland by a causeway. The mainland is overrun by the infected and is dangerous. In an effort to find a cure for his ill mother, Spike ventures to the mainland in search of a doctor that inhabits the area. The horrors he encounters are just part of the transformation he experiences as he’s on this journey.
Just an in the first film, the infected are as terrifying as ever! I must say I enjoyed the pace of the movie. There was a good balance between the development of the storyline and the intense action. As viewers, we get to know the characters and empathize with them as they walk the fine line between life and death in more ways than one.
Calm moments would suddenly be disrupted by startling noises and the appearance of ominous silhouettes in the distance. I certainly jumped a few times. The soundtrack and sound effects were well done. It goes to show that sometimes it’s better to not overwhelm audiences with nonstop action sequences in a horror movie. We need those moments of respite; plus, they make the scares all the more unexpected. I’m definitely curious where the tale is headed because the cliffhanger at the conclusion seemed to indicate that the overarching story isn’t over.
I was so grateful to have had the opportunity to see the film in advance. The special screening was held at the AMC theater at The Grove in Los Angeles. It was presented by Sony Pictures and hosted by Ghoul Daddies Matthew and Paul. The pair are popular horror content creators, and they kicked off the evening with a fun game of trivia inspired by 28 Days Later. It was neat to be among fellow horror enthusiasts. And I was excited to share my reaction to the movie with Latino digital media site mitú.
28 Years Later releases Friday, June 20, and will be exclusively in movie theaters. If you’re a horror/zombie fan, I recommend you check it out.
