Dark soundscapes are emanating from Scandinavian lands, generated by Mörksugga. This one-man band was formed by Ulrik who’s based in Sweden and has been involved in the music scene since he was a teen. He recently released his first full-length album titled Så Småningom Tar Allting Slut, which translates to “eventually, everything ends.” The work is riveting and has a pounding intensity that persists from start to finish.

Much of the music that is popular in mainstream media and plays on radio stations appears to adhere to a fixed formula dominated by monotonous themes and superficiality. So, listening to a group like Castle De Crux is quite revitalizing and enlightening. The band’s debut EP, Demons We Create, and new single “So Many Monsters” aren’t afraid to deviate from the norm and explore the shadows that society attempts to hide.

When you play 7 Uthras, be prepared to enter a post-apocalyptic world where shadows prevail. This is the second album by Ulvtharm, a musical project from the creative mind of Jouni Ollila, who is also the co-founder of the black industrial group MZ 412. In this new work, he constructs a decaying landscape where all hope is seemingly lost for humanity. Musician Dolly Dagger emerged just a few years ago and has since been blazing across the LA music scene. Originally from Australia, she’s made the City of Angels her home base and primary place to create. If her stage name sounds familiar, that’s because it’s the title of a well-known Jimi Hendrix tune, and it suits her style well. Her multifaceted alternative rock sound cuts through the BS to reveal hardcore truths about existence. She’s recently unleashed a powerful new single, “Tower,” along with an accompanying music video.

The Drood has been producing music for more than a decade and has gained a reputation for their unique experimentation with sound. Based out of Denver, CO, they’re a psych-rock band consisting of members Nathan Jamiel, Daniel Watts and Hayden Peltier. They dabble in multiple genres, including industrial, post-rock and psychedelia. I must admit, I haven’t listened to a lot of psych rock, and while I’m well acquainted with industrial music, I was curious to find out how this trio implements the genre in their work. I found their fourth full-length album, The Book of Drood, to be an interesting mix of trip hop, industrial and dark ambient vibes.

I went in listening to Arkham Sunset’s newest album with only a vague idea of what to expect. Based in Portland, OR, Gerry Hathaway is the founder and artist behind the music project and classifies his sound within the industrial, darkwave and synthpop genres. When I played Failure Analysis, my ears were met with an interesting blend of electronic sounds that spanned the entire album.
