Have you ever had a gut feeling about a situation that turned out to be correct? Have you experienced vivid dreams that, to your great surprise, foretold a future event? Or, maybe you just frequently have hunches about things and don’t understand why you do. Intuition is a guiding force in these situations and is key to unlocking psychic abilities.

I have been told that we all possess psychic capabilities, but many are either unaware of this or do not put much faith in the notion. We also live in a time where mass media and social media congest our senses, numbing our intuitive powers.

Currently, goth apparel and pagan shop Ipso Facto in Fullerton, California, is offering psychic development classes led by Shelley Hofberg, a medium and clairvoyant. The workshops will be a four-part series intended to help individuals tap into their sentient skills. I attended the first session, as well as a separate pet psychic class.

Hofberg has been practicing her craft for more than 35 years, having discovered her extrasensory gifts at a young age. In addition to being a psychic medium, she is a Tarot reader, healer and animal communicator. She has appeared on NBC’s “The Other Side,” the Discovery Channel, as well as hosted radio shows and podcasts.

I initially signed up for the pet psychic class because, as an owner of two cats and two dogs, the idea of learning how to communicate with my animals interested me. Who hasn’t wondered what their furry friends think or what they would say if they could talk? Shelley is also able to contact the spirits of departed pets.

The pet psychic class was an intimate gathering. Hofberg looked at photos of our pets and did a reading of initial impressions she received. So many of the details she related to me were spot-on, from their personalities to habits. I didn’t tell her anything beforehand besides show her pictures. Since she was able to pick up on these traits, she gave me insight as to what certain behaviors meant. She also reassured me that my deceased Chihuahua was still present, which was a comfort.

Interestingly, she shared that animals are psychic and understand humans much more than we think. It’s no wonder that they possess such strong instincts. The last half was dedicated to guided meditation to aid us further in connecting with our pets. At the conclusion, I realized that throughout centuries, animals have retained their sixth sense, whereas mankind has lost it.

To help with this, Hofberg is teaching others how to strengthen their third eye. Each meeting in the four-part psychic development series focuses on a different set of methods. Many people showed up for the first workshop. As an icebreaker, Shelley asked us to share any psychic experiences we’ve had. Some had stronger clairvoyant abilities, while others questioned if they had a psychic bone in their body.

I’m by no means advanced, but I’ve felt for a long time that I have a strong intuition and I recently learned that I can pick up other people’s energy. This sensitivity runs in my family because my mother has seen spirits and has had precognitive dreams; my grandmother had similar experiences. These classes are a way for me to reconnect with a part of my psyche that I don’t fully understand. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter where you are on your psychic journey; you can cultivate the second sight at any stage.

Hofberg then went on to introduce the three types of psychic sense. They include clairaudience (clear-hearing), clairsentience (clear-feeling) and clairvoyance (clear-seeing). You may already have an idea of which is your stronger sense.

To explore each type, we were guided in three separate meditations and after, asked to share what we perceived. Each individual experienced the exercises differently. Some of us responded more strongly to one meditation over another. Bringing a journal is strongly encouraged since it helps to record initial thoughts and feelings to reflect back on later.

Luckily, I had the opportunity to ask Shelley Hofberg a few questions to learn how she grew into her psychic abilities.

Q: What is one of the earliest memories you have of when your psychic abilities surfaced?

A: When I was 7 years old, I began to have psychic experiences. I had many encounters with spirits. I could see and hear when my grandmother died. She came to me and told me not to be afraid of my gifts; that I was special and would be able to help people.

Other psychic experiences I had was when I put my hands on the family cat. I knew that the cat was sick. I told my parents that something was wrong with her stomach and a vet confirmed that was correct. I could also see auras.

Q: How did realizing you had these gifts at such a young age make you feel?

A: Having my psychic gifts at a very young age at first was upsetting because not all of my experiences with spirits were positive. It was not until my grandmother passed away that I was able to handle my gifts because she protected me and helped guide me. When I got older, I learned about psychic protection.

Q: What inspired you to begin using your clairvoyant powers to offer readings and classes? And, were you nervous at all when you first started out?

A: It was my grandmother who inspired me to start doing psychic readings and classes because she came to me when my father got ill, and I had to take care of him. [She] told me it was my fate to be a psychic, healer and to teach others to develop their psychic gifts. I did psychic readings all of my life, but after my father passed away, I began to follow my path.

I started out working psychic fairs and expos, which helped me build up my psychic business by getting private clients. I also worked as a psychic reader and taught tarot, channeling and psychic development classes at many metaphysical bookstores. I got hired as a psychic and went on to work for California psychics as a reader. After working as a psychic, I discovered I was a healer. When I started using crystals to scan the body, I could pick up psychic information and send healing energy.

Q: I’ve been told that we all have psychic abilities, but so many people don’t tap into them, either because they’re unaware of the fact or afraid. Why do you think it’s important for us to develop this part of ourselves?

A: I feel because psychic abilities are a part of our nature that it is important for us to be able to develop our psychic senses of seeing, feeling, hearing and knowing to be more connected with the spiritual side of our nature, and for spirit guides and angels who can help us on our path to know our purpose. Having psychic gifts is very rewarding because you can help yourself and others.

Q: What do you hope individuals walk away with after a meeting or session with you?

A: What I hope will happen in a psychic session with me is that you will be much clearer about your present situation and have a deeper awareness of the changes that may be happening in your future and in all areas of your life. A psychic session with Shelley is like a guild post on the road that lets you know what direction you need to go in your life to create a better future and obtain the love and success that you are seeking.

I left the first class feeling optimistic in my ability to tune into my senses. I also felt relief. Maybe that’s because I’m finally allowing my intuitive energy to flow and have more reign. Plus, I appreciated the sense of community the class provided. There was no judgement, everyone listened to each other and showed support.

You needn’t have attended the initial workshop to join the others. Dates haves already been set for parts two and three. Some of the content that will be covered includes divination, psychic channeling, automatic writing, palmistry, crystal ball gazing, past life reading and more.

  1. Wow, Jennifer, that experience was packed full of fascinating insights it provoked much thought. In fact, I read through it twice.

How fortunate you focused on pets, because who among us doesn’t love our (non-human) family members?

Often wondered about pets. They certainly have a…sensitivity. Whether that’s psychic, merely a closer observation of their world than we manage, or some of both, it fascinates.

And you’ve found one more way to bond. Brava!

    1. Thank you! I’m so glad you enjoyed my recap. I do feel that the pet psychic class helped me understand my fur babies a bit more.
And I’m looking forward to attending the other classes in the series. It’s exciting to think of what I’ll learn.

      1. You know, Jennifer, anticipation is one the best sensations. Savoring recent memories, and knowing even better awaits.

From what I understand (Of course, I am the world’s greatest living authority. Sure.), it’s exactly the attitude you want to have when planning a psychic/extrasensory journey. Oh, the places you’ll go, right?
