It’s time to descend into the bowels of hell with The Sixth Chamber. The gothic doom metal band has just unleashed their third full length album titled Beyond the Night Veil. Over the last few years, they’ve released singles giving listeners a taste of what was to come. A few of these tracks included “Blood of the Prophet,” “Walpurgis Night” and “Red Death Masquerade.” Here’s what you can expect from their latest LP.

As the album’s title suggests, the music transports you to a realm that transcends this earthly domain. Even the names of the songs carry mystical connotations, such as “Hades” and “Necropolis.” The opening track, “Penny Dreadful,” begins with howling wolves preparing for their nocturnal hunt and the name hints at the dark adventures to ensue. For anyone who isn’t aware, penny dreadfuls were sensational fiction publications that were popular during the Victorian period in England, so it seems a fitting way to begin the album.

Founder and vocalist Rahne Pistor is clever with his lyrics and if one listens closely enough, fascinating literary and occult references hidden within the music reveal themselves. It’s part of the band’s charm and what adds substance to their music. Pistor’s own travels to Egypt have influenced the group’s sound, music videos and performances, as is evident in “Necropolis” and “Entrance to the Cold Waste.”

The album also features collaborations with other musicians, such as renowned keyboardist Alan St. Jon who worked on a few tracks, and talented violinist Lillian Liu who appears on “Walpurgis Night.” The concluding piece, “This Hallowed Chamber,” which was composed by Alan St. Jon, closes out the LP nicely with hints of mystery and melancholy. Beyond the Night Veil possesses elements of gothic rock, metal and psychedelic rock, bringing these together to create a listening experience that’s fantastical and supernatural.

I really enjoyed the album, and I think it’ll satiate the appetites of all those craving something dark and riveting to take in musically. You can check out The Sixth Chamber’s Beyond the Night Veil yourself on most streaming platforms.

  1. Very interesting music. The Walpurgis night reminds me of the Walpurgis festival, which is a big festival in Sweden (April 30). People light bonfires, shoot fireworks and sing songs to welcome May and the spring. Uppsala, my student town, have some very big Walpurgis celebrations with nearly 30,000 students running down the street in front of the Carolina Redeviva, the largest library in Europe.
