I experienced the most delightful madness at Midsummer Scream. Besides October 31st, this Halloween and horror convention is one of the biggest spooky events of the year and is the highlight of my summerween. It’s been my annual tradition to attend since 2018, and this year was my first time going two days, so I saw and did a lot! Here’s my recap of 2023’s festivities.

It’s 2023, and one can’t help but marvel at all the upcoming spooky and dark-filled delights the new year has awaiting in the shadows, ready to come forth and lure people in. Vamp Jenn’s Corner has established a tradition around here releasing its annual Odd & Macabre Events Calendar in January. I’ve scoured the beyond to find the most magical experiences slated to happen in the coming months, so you can all set dates and plan outings. Of course, I hope to attend as many of these events as I can as well.
The offerings featured here are taking place in Los Angeles and across the U.S., but I am trying to add events happening internationally too. What follows is what’s been announced thus far, but new activities continue to come up as the year goes on. I also include spooky holidays and special occasions. I will be updating this calendar throughout 2023, so make sure to check back often. Cheers to a New Year of the most sinister escapades yet!

For the Halloween season, I returned to the House of Spirits, and this time to explore the legend of Vaughan Hall. I attended on October 15th, its first evening being open to the public. For 2022, the event took place at an entirely different venue in Los Angeles called Casa Vertigo. It offered up new live acts, performances, characters, cocktails and dark secrets.

Universal Studios Hollywood has been in full-blown Halloween mode since launching Horror Nights on September 8th, and I attended during its second weekend of being open. Now, normally I wait to do this event closer to my birthday, but prices during October for the express pass increased like crazy, so to save some money, I decided to go earlier. For the first time in three years, Midsummer Scream made its long-awaited return to Long Beach, CA! After having to cancel the event in 2020 and move to a smaller venue in 2021, the Halloween and horror convention had its homecoming in 2022. If you don’t know, the event spans across a three-day weekend, featuring discussion panels, celebrity interviews, haunts, vendors and other activities geared toward the spooky community. I’ve been looking forward to it for months and am here to share details of my experience.

We’re at that point in summerween when it’s time to start preparing for the upcoming spooky season! It’s the start of a new year, which means it’s time to release my annual Odd & Macabre Events Calendar for 2022! Unlike the past two years, there are quite a few venues that have already announced dates for upcoming festivities. My fingers are crossed that these will all take place. As always, I’m going to attend as much as I can. Activities are slowly popping up, and I’ll continually be updating this post, so make sure to check back for new additions.
Although I’m based near Los Angeles, I’m doing my best to include things that are happening in other parts of the globe. Who wouldn’t want to discover spooky adventures occurring in their neck of the woods? Some of what you’ll find here include the first-ever Satanic convention, vampire soirees, immersive shows, dark art exhibits, virtual gatherings and more. My answer to both questions is “yes,” and I had the chance to have such an experience when I attended Delusion. This attraction is not simply a maze or Halloween haunt. It’s dark theatre that requires guests to do more than just watch—they want them to join in on the action.

You are cordially invited to take a peek behind the doors of the House of Spirits. It was my first time experiencing this mysteriously macabre event, and I loved every minute of it! As the name states, it is a Haunted Cocktail Soirée, offering a variety of adult libations on the grounds of a beautiful estate—but that’s not all that was offered. The property held secrets only to be revealed to attendees. There were hidden rooms, eerie characters lurking down hallways and magical performances.
